East End Missionary Baptist Church recently recognized two college students at its Youth Explosion service, presenting each a $500 scholarship.
Honored were Christopher Miller, a graduate of Rocky Mount High School, and Shyheim Graham, a graduate of SouthWest Edgecombe High School, a release says.
Now a freshman at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Miller is a physics major whose career goal is to become an aerospace engineer. He also has been named to the fall dean’s list and has been named a Light on the Hill Society Scholar, a program organized in part by N.C. Sen. Angela Bryant, a member of the university’s Class of 1973.
Miller graduated with a 4.0 grade-point average from Rocky Mount High’s college preparatory honors program, the release says.
Majoring in music education and minoring in business education at Shaw University, Graham also was named to the fall dean’s list. He also earned a position in the Shaw University Platinum Sound Marching Band, where he plays tuba.
While a student at SouthWest High, Miller held many leadership positions in the Marching Cougars band, the release says.
The awards brings to six the number of scholarships awarded by the church since 2010. The program, which is run by the nonprofit East End Baptist Scholarship Foundation, is open to students in the Nash-Rocky Mount and Edgecombe County school systems.
“The mission of the East End Baptist Scholarship Foundation is to support the goals and activities of East End Baptist Church by nurturing a wholesome relationship with external contributors, obtaining financial support and serving as prudent financial stewards of the Scholarship Foundation’s resources,” the release says.
East End Missionary Baptist Church is at 928 E. Highland Ave. Its senior pastor is the Rev. Mack. E. Battle.
