Roslyn Kind has come a long way from her days of singing in front of a mirror as a child.

Starting her recording career as a teenager, Kind has gone on to perform around the world, starred on Broadway and acted in films and on television. Now, the singer is coming to Rocky Mount.

Kind will perform a mix of ballads, theater tunes, jazz and other music at her concert at 8 p.m. Friday at the Dunn Center for the Performing Arts, said Sheila Martin, executive director.

“During the month in February, we have tried to stick with more romantic themes and felt that this would be a wonderful opportunity for an early Valentine dinner and show for couples. She will sing so much music from Broadway but with a love theme,” Martin said.

The concert will consist of songs that Kind loves and feels people relate to, she said. Pianist David Snyder will join Kind as she takes people on a journey of love with songs such as “Speak Low,” “It’s Today” and “Can You Read My Mind.”

When the concert is over, Kind said she wants the audience to walk out feeling warmth, love and acceptance.

“I tend to see when somebody is not in a great place, and I work harder toward those people to make them smile. I think that is what performance is all about,” Kind said.
