Carson Barnes’ doctor talked tough to him after Barnes suffered a second heart attack. Exercise and diet control were among the steps the doctor told Barnes he would have to take to prolong his life.

Every beat of Carson Barnes’ heart is precious.

He knows each beat is one doctors didn’t think he’d have after he suffered two heart attacks in two weeks in 2006. Barnes, 74, lost function in 52 percent of his heart, and an internal defibrillator has kept it beating regularly for almost four years.

    Pat Bradley has been told three times that she has renal cell carcinoma, a type of kidney cancer, and each time her reaction was different. The bouts in 1979 in a kidney and in 1998 in a pelvic bone took their tolls, but it was the diagnosis in 2005 of cancer in her lungs that had the greatest effect.
