PEMBROKE — UNC-Pembroke student Nicholas Phillips, a 2008 graduate of Rocky Mount High School, recently won a third place award for feature writing in the annual competition hosted by the N.C. College Media Association.
Phillips, who was also named to the Chancellor’s List for attaining a minimum 3.7 GPA during the Fall Semester, is sports editor of UNC-Pembroke’s student newspaper The Pine Needle. His award-winning article was a retrospective look at the first five years of football at the university, titled “UNCP Football: The Right Decision.”
Three UNC-Pembroke student publications won a total of 10 College Media awards with The Pine Needle winning two. The entries were judged in the over-6,000 enrollment category with UNC-Chapel Hill, N.C. State University and East Carolina University.
