Mu Chapter of Delta Kappa learns about health, wellness

Mu Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International held a valuable meeting Feb. 10 when Jennifer Stephenson of the health FIRST Wellness Center presented a program and distributed brochures related to heart health as well as other helpful information.

Stephenson explained all of the diverse services offered by this center and for this program focused on the importance of exercise. To be fit one needs to exercise 30 to 45 minutes a day for five to six days a week. The exercise should be strenuous enough to work up a sweat and get the heart revved up. Strength training such as lifting weights is important for women as it helps to maintain bone density and balance.

Eight to 10 minutes should be spent warming up as this helps to prevent injuries.

The Personal Growth Committee chaired by Ann Bishop provided refreshments for the day. Bishop said the committee received more than 25 books plus $98 for books which were to be used in the weekend backpacks for Englewood Elementary School students. Thanks to Ann Davis, each book will have a bookplate indicating that Mu Chapter was the donor.

President Marianne Matthews shared her excitement about the Eta State Convention at the Doubletree Hotel and Convention Center in Rocky Mount. Members approved purchasing an ad in the program for $45 which would welcome visitors to the area. Tobey Worthington was in charge of preparing a large basket to be auctioned.

International Music Representative Patricia Taylor urged members to attend the SE Regional Conference to be held July 14-16 in Louisville, Ky. Taylor also informed members of the special website she has established for DKG Artists and urged members to check it out and to participate.

The annual TriChapter meeting with Gamma Lambda hosting was held Febr. 26 at the West Edgecome Baptist Church. Some 15 Mu Chapter members planned to attend this annual meeting of the three chapters — Mu, Beta Theta and Gamma Lambda. Both Beta Theta and Gamma Lambda are outgrowths of Mu Chapter. Much excitement was added to the day by the Fund Raising project led by Reba Fulghum and Jane Parvin.

A committee of six cooks — Elaine Christianson, Tobey Worthington, Jane Parvin, Marianne Matthews, Beth Wingfield, Suanne Downs — had prepared quarts of different kinds of soups for sale and Jess McBride has prepared small packages of fudge with Reba Fulghum furnishing the crackers. With prearranged orders, the total amount quickly changed hands and in addition to having lots of fun and good humour as well as a nice warm meal when they reached home, members contributed $382 to the special Fund Raising effort. The Fundraising Committee has used various methods to raise funds to meet rising costs. It is to be noted that all of the cooks donated their ingredients as well as their time and expertise. Mu Chapter continues to be one of the outstanding chapters in Eta State and has been active since being founded in 1942. The Delta Kappa Gamma Society is an honor society for outstanding educators now extending to 17 member countries.
