The ninth annual Heritage Day Banquet sponsored by the Shaw University Alumni Association will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Thorne’s Chapel Family Life Center, 1624 Windsor Drive in Rocky Mount.

This year’s speaker is the Rev. Dr. Haywood T. Gray, who is the executive secretary-treasurer of the General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. The convention represents more than a half-million black Baptists in more than 1,600 congregations across North Carolina. He has held this position since January 2005. He is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Convention and the coordination of financial support for its mission’s objectives. In less than six years, he was responsible for raising in excess of $10 million for missions. As a writer, he published his first work in 1992 and it became the official manual for ushers in General Baptist Churches in North Carolina. He is a former Trustee of Shaw University Divinity School. Presently, he sits on both the Board of Trustees of Shaw University and the Board of Directors of Central Children’s Home in Oxford. He is a member of the Executive Board of the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Missions Convention. Shaw University awarded the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree to him in 2006.
