The Rocky Mount Edgecombe Community Development Corp. will be hosting a series of workshops designed to help people get everything ready in preparation for buying a home.

The first workshop will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at the corporation’s building at 148 South Washington St., where the second session also will be at 6 p.m. Jan. 23.

“It is for first-time home buyers in Nash and Edgecombe counties,” certified housing consultant Lori Jones said.

During the sessions, participants will go over financial literature about how to start a budget, the importance of full-time employment and going before a mortgagor, Jones said.

Each session will run about two hours, Jones said, and must be completed before people can attend an individual session, which lasts about an hour.

Participants will have homework between the sessions, such as setting a budget and pulling their credit score, Jones said.

“We try to get people to help themselves by using the resources available in their community,” Jones said.

Those who complete both sessions and the individual session will gain access to special funding from the N.C. Housing Agency, Jones said.

Guest speakers at the seminars will include a realtor, an attorney and a representative from Edward Jones, who will be speaking on the importance of planning for the future and having a will.

“It is a well-rounded course about buying a nice product and staying in that nice product,” Jones said.

The workshop is the first of 10 the corporation will be offering, the next of which will be Feb. 13 and Feb. 20 at the Thorne Ridge Apartments.

The event is free to the public, but participants must pre-register before Wednesday by calling 252-442-8553 ext. 237.
