The Rocky Mount Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. announced officers and public service plans for the 2011-2013 biennium. Established on April 4, 1947, the Rocky Mount chapter has provided more than 60 years of public service and social action to the communities of Nash and Edgecombe counties in Eastern North Carolina.

In an effort to remain attentive to Delta Sigma Theta’s mission of empowering communities through committed service, the chapter has planned numerous community activities to align with the Sorority’s Five Point 
Programmatic Thrust of economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health and political awareness and involvement.

Under the charge of the Sorority’s National President Cynthia M.A. Butler McIntyre, the local chapter will enhance many of the programs and initiatives of each programmatic thrust throughout the new biennium.

Enhancements to adult-centered programs will include financial institutional modules to promote home ownership and entrepreneurship, increased awareness of chronic illnesses affecting the black family, and programs focusing on wellness of the total individual.

Meanwhile, enhancements to youth-centered initiatives will sustain the enrichment and growth of the chapter’s current educational and mentoring programs-Delta Academy and Delta Gems, which target area girls ages 11-14 and 14-18 respectively.

These enhancements will include an increased focus on literacy, black history, character development, disaster preparedness service learning, and parental involvement.

The chapter’s most recent educational development initiative entitled EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence) will continue to target the growth and development of black males in sixth through eighth grade.

The Rocky Mount Alumnae Chapter’s president, Katrina Alston Joyner, and its 100-plus members look forward to implementing the enhancements and additional activities to align with needs of the community.
