Mu Chapter ends year on a successful note

Mu Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International participated fully in the 77th Annual Convention of Eta State held April 30 to May 1 at the DoubleTree Inn and Convention Center.

Patricia Taylor provided special music as well as introducing the scholarship winners as part of her duties as scholarships chairwoman.

Mu Chapter President Marianne Matthews led the group in setting up a refreshment room for members to enjoy.

Ann Davis, Sandra Holloman, Patricia Taylor and Tobey Worthington served as facilitators for various workshops and members of the chapter prepared a beautiful gardening basket to be raffled off.

Elizabeth Crawford, deceased, was memoralized in the Ceremony of Remembrance on May 1 at Lakeside Baptist Church. Ann Bishop and Ann Edge participated in the ceremony.

Four current chapter members were included in the publication “Women of Influence,” including Katherine Collins, Jeannette Pittman and Jesslyn McBride and Patricia Taylor.

Ann Davis, Elaine Christianson, Patricia Taylor and Beth Wingfield participated in the chorus with Beth Wingfield selling some of her famous scarves for fundraising. Patricia Taylor was elected incoming Eta State First Vice President in addition to her duties as International Music Representative and as a member of the International Excellence Committee and Chairman of the Eta State Excellence Committee.

Mu Chapter also received an award for Website Excellence as well as a Gold Award for Excellence in general.

The final chapter meeting of the year was held at the Gateway Technological Center on the Wesleyan Campus on May 19 with the director of the center, Marilynn Anselmi, a member of Mu Chapter, presenting a Power Point presentation and conducting a tour of the center.

Anselmi explained that she works for both East Carolina University and N.C. State University.

The center, designed to offer higher education opportunities opened in 2006 and has served more than 30,000 people since that time. It offers support for more than 100 ECU and N.C. State degree programs.

It is available to the public schools for use for free.

It is used for virtual field trips, quiz bowls, AP testing and other activities.

This summer there will be eight enrichment camps for more than 1000 students. On the agenda are math camps, engineering camps, 4-H biotechnology camps. N.C. State College of Vet Medicine for middle school students, writing workshops for rising 10th- graders, reading enrichment program for kindergarten through 12th grade, and the Ret. Gen. Hugh Shelton leadership program for high school students.

Community Engagement also is another important part of the programs. They work to partner with the community colleges, nonprofit organizations and training for different trades.

Mu Chapter has chosen to participate in the two important programs of the international organization — Schools for Africa and the new Teacher Initiative which is designed to help new teachers stay in the classroom. Mu Chapter continues to be one of the outstanding chapters in Eta State and has been active since being founded in 1942.

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society is an honor society for outstanding educators now extending to 17 member countries.

Mu Chapter membership is by invitation.
