The G.W. Carver Alumni Association is preparing to celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the founding of the school.
The S.A. Gilliam Scholarship Awards Banquet is among the highlights of the celebration. The banquet will be held at 5 p.m. on July 6 at the Double Tree Hotel at 651 N. Winstead Ave.
The keynote speaker will be SouthWest Edgecombe High School graduate Kenneth Earl Wiggins, a recipient of the S.A. Gilliam Scholarship in 1979. Entertainment will be provided by vocalist Roenitia Steward of Raleigh.
Wiggins earned a degree in biology in 1983 from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He is the COO and co-founder of KenCord Biotherapeutics LLC, a pharmaceutical sales and marketing company based in Charlotte.
Wiggins is the son of Augusta and Doretha Wiggins of Pinetops. He and his wife Sherry live in Harrisburg.
Advance tickets to the awards banquet are $50. Purchase deadline is June 22. All proceeds benefit the S.A. Gilliam Scholarship Fund.

Other events scheduled include a Dutch breakfast at 9:30 a.m. on July 5 followed by the annual business meeting at the Golden Corral restaurant in Rocky Mount.
The class of 1966 is sponsoring an Old Fashion Prom at GW Carver Elementary School at 5 p.m. July 5. For prom tickets call Elizabeth Meeks at 252-291-4631.
Members of the alumni assoaciation also will attend a church service at 11 a.m. July 7 at Harts Chapel Baptist Church on Noble Mill Pond Road.
