Participants in the second annual Tarboro Heart and Stroke Walk raised more than $2,000 for the American Heart Association.
Approximately 100 people walked in the walk, said Derrick Haskins, health promotion coordinator for the Edgecombe County Health Department.
The event, which was sponsored by Vidant Edgecombe Hospital and the Edgecombe County Health Department, featured music, face painting, health information and other activities.
Cheerleaders from East Carolina University cheered on the walkers. One of the cheerleaders, who had been affected by heart disease, shared her story with the group. Representatives from the Edgecombe County Rescue Squad gave CPR demonstrations. Haskins said organizers hope the event will grow every year and become a staple in the community.
