Fun Day fundraiser to benefit Humane Society

Having fun for the sake of furry friends: that is the goal behind a Saturday afternoon event at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex.

The park will be filled with a variety of attractions for all ages as part of Family Fun Day to benefit the Edgecombe-Nash Humane Society. The festivities will kick off at noon with live music by Jamie Pridgen. Other activities include a fishing tournament, a corn hole tournament and registration for a city-wide scavenger hunt. Food, entertainment and games also will captivate the crowds throughout the afternoon.

Fishers must bring their own gear, have a valid fishing license and pay $5 to enter the tournament for ages 9 to 17 and $15 for adults older than 18. In addition to the entrants with the most fish and the biggest fish, teams in the corn hole tournament will be eligible for prizes. In addition to handing out information and talking with attendees about their work, the Humane Society volunteers will have a few animals at the event and accept adoption applications. Donations and volunteers also will be recruited during the event.

“There are so many animals out there that need us and we just don’t have the funds to help them all,” Pullins said. “If we had more funds, we could help more. As it is, everything we raise and scrape together and borrow and owe goes toward these animals.”

New this year is a scavenger hunt, thanks to local restaurants and retail store owners joining in the fun. It costs $5 to enter and each additional clue costs $1 with the first clue given out on Saturday and the hunt taking place the following Saturday.

“No one can get the second clue until the next Saturday, but they can look for it and find it on the 16th or during the week leading up to the 23rd,” Pullins said. “Each of the merchants will have a door prize for the first person to retrieve each clue, so teams will want to figure it out quick.”

The first- and second-place teams who retrieve all of the clues will win a patio table and chair set or a Chico’s gift card, respectively.

All of the proceeds from the activities will help support food, medical care and other support for rescued animals.

“We cover operations and heartworm treatment and shots and spaying or neutering – we cover it all,” Pullins said. “If a dog is sick or comes in with a broken bone, we’ll take care of it. The only thing that still hurts on these animals when they leave our care is their spirit.

“Often their spirit has been broken, but we try our best to make sure these animals get what they deserve, which are good homes with people who love them and treat them like a family member.”
