When fossil fuels are burned it lets out carbon dioxide. This gas goes out and makes a layer around the planet. When the heat from the sun comes in and bounces off the Earth and back into space, some is reflected back and is trapped. This causes rapid warming around the planet. If more people stop wasting fuel and polluting, global warming will stop!
Determined Buzzard
By Madison Register, third grade, OLPH Catholic School
There was a scientist who lived in Mississippi. His name was the Determined Buzzard. He and his wife had a pet robin. The robin would say things like, "Let's keep the tabernacle to ourselves." Buzzard's wife also had a dignified blue jay and a cardinal hatched on a plateau. Their other pets included a hawk and an owl who loved geography, and a wren that had been taught a science course by the robin. To round out their collection the buzzards kept a thrush that had a bad wing structure.
A Special Person
By Casey Jones, second grade, Rocky Mount Academy
I am a special person because I am talented. I want to be an artist. I can look at the earth and see what I can draw. I want to be a scientist, too, and study things. I learn a lot in science. I get all dirty.
