Judging by what the car companies have been sending me to test drive, I would have to believe they are trying to get you guys to buy some compact crossovers.
Which makes sense.
I love these smaller SUV-type vehicles, and they definitely appeal to those looking for a smaller, cheaper and more fuel-efficient mode of transportation than a full-size SUV.
The GMC Terrain is a top choice for those looking for a compact crossover.
Taking cues from its big brother, the GMC Acadia, the Terrain is styled to please.
Though it’s the smallest of GMC’s lineup, on the exterior, the Terrain has been styled to appear brawny and buff. The wheel wells have a boxy shell that give it a truck-like silhouette and a large front grille makes it seem like it’s ready to plow over rocks, creek beds or bikes left in the driveway.
Put beside most of the Terrain’s competitors, like the Chevy Equinox, the Hyundai Santa Fe or the Ford Escape, the Terrain probably wins the award for most muscular.
Under the hood the Terrain is equipped with a standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine producing 182 horsepower. The Terrain also comes standard with front-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is optional across the board.
If you go for the SLT1 or SLT2 trims, you can opt for a 3.0-liter V6 that produces 264 hp and 222 lb-ft of torque.
The overall driving experience was pleasant and the Terrain has a smooth car-like driving dynamic.
Gas mileage averages about 20 mpg in the Terrain.
Inside, the Terrain’s design aesthetic had more character than competitors. It wasn’t really fancier than other crossover interiors, it just had a little more driver and passenger friendliness to it. The dash had a lot of information on it, but not too much. Climate and radio controls were well-placed and very functional and seating was comfortable.
Terrain prices start at about $24,00 for a SLE-1 and progress up through three more trim levels, topping out with a base SLT2 for about $30,000.
