Sports Bar moves to roomier location

A sports bar on Wesleyan Boulevard in Rocky Mount is opening Friday night.

But the business, which is moving into a building that was previously a Mexican restaurant when it was last in use a few years ago, is not a new one.

For the last few years, Low Key Sports Bar & Grill had occupied space in a building that was formerly a Pizza Hut at 1281 Goldrock Road. The owners decided to move into the larger space at 1540 N. Wesleyan Blvd.

The business is owned by couples T.J. and Shameka Morgan and Jay and Tamica Hill.

Shameka Morgan said the extra building space was the draw.

“If you have ever been inside of a Pizza Hut, you know how small they are. I’m not going to knock it. It carried us two whole years,” she said. “But if you can do better, why not do better?”

She said the new location holds 240 people.

“This space a whole lot bigger,” she said.

They also have a larger kitchen in the new building, which has allowed them to expand their menu.

Among other things, it is offering ribeye steaks, steak sandwiches, potato skins, fries, buffalo wings, onion rings, potato rings, nachos, chili cheese fries, hot dogs, cheeseburgers and chicken parmesan subs.

The business has two full-liquor bars, one stand-alone with an outdoor patio, and another on the wall of the dance floor. In the dance-floor section, disc jockeys will be playing music on weekends. The dance-floor area, at times, will be reserved for events such as bridal showers and bachelor parties, but live entertainment also is planned. The bands have not yet been scheduled.

“We couldn’t have bands at the other location. We were so small,” she said. “But here, we’re going to have bands.”

The business also has a poolroom with two pool tables and dining tables and flat-screen televisions along the walls.

Low Key Sports Bar & Grill will be open seven days a week. Its doors are open to the public at 8 p.m. tonight. The business will be open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. On Fridays and Saturdays, it will be open from 8 p.m. until 3 a.m. On Sundays, it will be open from 6 p.m. until midnight.
