Trucks bought or serviced at Advantage Truck Center can be seen throughout the area transporting everything from milk to garbage.
“If it has anything to do with heavy duty trucks, we do it,” said Bill Prater, general manager of the company’s Rocky Mount location at 2550 N. Church St.
The company is one of the Southeast’s largest providers of trucks and truck-related products and services, its website says.
The company is owned by Terry Young of Charlotte. Its four locations are in Rocky Mount, Charlotte, Hickory and Durham.
Advantage Truck is an authorized dealer for Autocar, Hino, Isuzu and Volvo trucks. The company offers full-service leases and rentals affiliated with NationaLease, the website says.
The company also has an extensive inventory of used trucks and parts for a wide range of models of trucks and tractors. It offers service and warranty work for Autocar, GMC, Hino, Isuzu and Volvo trucks. It has a full-service collusion center with a paint booth and offers financing and insurance services.
Q: What products or services do you provide?
A: We’re a heavy truck dealer. We provide new trucks, parts and service. We sell new Volvo trucks, highway trucks, over-the-road dump trucks, anything to do with heavy-duty trucking. We carry Autocar, a brand of truck. It’s primarily used as a garbage truck or trash truck. We carry Hino, a medium-duty truck.
Q: How many employees does your company have?
A: We have 15 in Rocky Mount.
Q: Who are your key leaders?
A: General manager Bill Prater, service writer Leonard Slagle, parts manager Junior Tucker and used truck manager Danny Kelly.
Q: What is your business philosophy?
A: To service our customers. That pretty much says it all, to make them happy.
Q: When were you established?
A: Terry Young started this company in 1994. He bought this facility in 2000. It used to be called Service Sales.
Q: What makes your business unique?
A: I guess the fact that we are experts in our field. We are considered “the truck experts.” That is our slogan.
Q: What changes do you expect for your company in coming years?
A: Continued growth. As of Sept. 1, we have acquired two other dealerships. We’ve acquired the Volvo franchise in St. Pauls. In Kernersville, Central Carolina Trucks has merged into Advantage Truck Center.
Q: Why did you choose Rocky Mount as a place to do business?
A: Because we purchased the existing dealership (Service Sales) and the fact it close to Interstate 95 and we do a lot of business in the eastern part of the state with the Autocar brand. We do a lot of refuse business.
Q: How has business changed in the last several years?
A: The trucking industry and economy as a whole is down about the last five years, but our business has remained steady. It’s been tough, but in our industry you have to keep growing or you are going to get run over.
