Top of the Pines Catering & Gift Shoppe touts itself as a one-stop unique catering business in Pinetops that provides hot food to a wide variety of events from the coast to Raleigh.
Owners Peggy and Mike Hinton operate the gift shop at 112 S.W. First St. and cook the food for the catering business in a commercial kitchen in the back of the building.
“We do anything – weddings, birthdays, corporate events,” Peggy Hinton said. “We have worked (providing catering) for a couple of hospitals around town. We cater anything. We serve country food. We serve really fancy foods for weddings. We do lunches and dinners. We average two or three weddings on the coast every year.”
For several decades before buying the building in 2010, Hinton had catered food out of her home.
“We got to point that we had so much business we had to go to a commercial (building),” she said.
In April 2010, she opened Top of the Pines Cafe in her building to complement the catering business. But she closed the restaurant portion of the business in November.
“I couldn’t handle catering and the restaurant,” Hinton said. “We just closed the restaurant and turned the front of it into gift shop.”
Several days a week, Hinton works answering the phone and doing taxes and payroll at Hines Equipment Co., and she opens the gift shop on Fridays and Saturdays.
The gift shops sells many items that her catering customers need.
“I sell invitations, napkins, cups and Koozies,” she said. “I sell things that go with weddings. We’re like a one-stop stop shop. We print invitations there.”
