MATTHEWS — A spokesman for Family Dollar says the company is laying off 135 workers at its Matthews headquarters.
The layoffs represent 6 percent of the workforce in Matthews and cover all divisions and operating levels of the company’s headquarters, also known as the “Store Support Center.”
Spokeswoman Bryn Winburn says the job cuts follow a “comprehensive review” and are meant to increase efficiency and improve the company’s financial performance. Winburn said the cuts are “difficult, but necessary.”
Several key executives have left, including chief operating officer Michael Bloom, who resigned in January after customer traffic and profits fell during its three most recent quarters. The company has blamed a tough economic climate, but Dollar General has grown its profits at the same time.
