Earnings roundup: CommVault, Alcon

The Associated Press

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

OCEANPORT, N.J. (AP) — CommVault Systems Inc. reported a flat fiscal second-quarter profit as rising operating expenses and revenue costs overshadowed an increase in sales.

NEW YORK (AP) — Eye drug maker Alcon Inc. said its profit fell 18 percent in the third quarter compared with a year ago, when it received a large tax benefit.

WASHINGTON (AP) — General Dynamics Corp.'s third-quarter earnings suffered from a drop in demand for business jets, but higher sales of defense products led the military contractor to boost its profit outlook for the year and it now expects business with foreign governments to grow next year, and beyond.

ConocoPhillips became the latest major oil company to report that its profit plunged in the third quarter while at the same time announcing a sharp uptick in production.

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Wright Express Corp., a payment processor for commercial and government vehicle fleets, said its third-quarter earnings plunged as its customers continued to curb spending and use less credit.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) — Auto parts manufacturer BorgWarner Inc. posted a better-than-expected third-quarter profit on lower revenue, crediting cost-cutting and a favorable comparison with the same period last year when the auto parts maker took hefty charges.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Savvis Inc. reported a growing loss for the third quarter as revenue from its network services businesses declined.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Silicon Laboratories Inc.'s third-quarter profit leaped as the chip designer reported an 11 percent increase in revenue and lower expenses. Stronger demand for consumer electronics helped lift the results.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Public Service Enterprise Group Inc., which generates, transmits and distributeselectric energy, said its third-quarter profit fell 26 percent, which compared unfavorably with the same quarter last year.
