Thoughts from Week One at SWE

Here are some quick notes from SouthWest Edgecombe's 40-14 win against Elizabeth City Northeastern last week. And it's also the first blog post on the fancy new website. How exciting.

-- One of the focal points entering Week One for the Cougars was how they would perform without the leadership and playmaking abilities of senior quarterback Chris Ellerbe. Ellerbe, who will miss six-to-eight weeks with a chip in his right fibula, was replaced by senior Brandon Epps. Epps only attempted one pass on the night, so there's not much to analyze there, but he did appear to be in command of the offense. All but one of the exchanges to the running backs were smooth. He did, however suffer from some serious cramps late in the fourth quarter. He could barely get off the field, and the trainers squeezed mustard into his mouth to ease the pain. Epps really hated the mustard, though, and reacted as if he had just been hit in the face by a huge bug. It was quite a sight. Epps was playing both ways (free safety), and it was the first game of the season, so that probably explains why his muscles betrayed him.

-- Senior running back Javelle Jenkins hurt his hand on the first play of the season, returning a kickoff, and didn't re-enter the game for a few series. His carries were limited, so if he can come back healthy, it will provide even more of a boost to the Cougars' dangerous backfield.

In other news, Jammin' 99 has altered its radio schedule for the remainder of the season and now includes three Rocky Mount High games. Here it is:

Sept. 3 - Tarboro @ Northern Nash Sept. 10 - Wilson Hunt @ SW Edgecombe Sept. 17 - Rocky Mount @ SW Edgecombe Sept. 24 - Wilson Beddingfield @ Greene Central Oct. 1 - Kinston @ Wilson Beddingfield Oct. 8 - Southern Nash @ Wilson Fike Oct. 15 - Nash Central @ Wilson Fike Oct. 22 - Wilson Fike @ Rocky Mount Oct. 29 - Northern Nash @ Wilson Fike Nov. 5 - Northern Nash @ Rocky Mount
