Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum announced today that he was suspending his campaign and dropping out of the race. He did not endorse any other candidates.
The announcement comes after the candidate left the campaign trail this weekend once his 3-year-old daughter, Bella, who suffers from a rare genetic disorder, was taken to the hospital on Friday.
"We made a decision over the weekend that, while this presidential race for us is over, for me, and we will suspend our campaign effective today, we are not done fighting," he said. "Against all odds,, we won 11 states, millions of voters, millions of votes."
Santorum also indicated that he would continue to play a role in this year's election even if he was no longer running for office.
"This game is a long, long, long way from over. We will continue to go out and fight and defeat President Barack Obama," he said.
Even before his daugther's illness, the deck was stacked against Santorum. In order to reach the needed 1,144 delegates to win the nomination, he would have needed to win 80 percent of each of the remaining delegates. That was virtually impossible thanks to the proportional system sed to award delegates in some states.
