From Tee to Green

  • Second round action at Doral

    By Trevor Seibert | Friday, March 12, 2010 - 20:45

The second round at Doral was suspended, and then the 18 players who hadn't finished their round got their chance before the daylight faded.

Ernie Els leads the way at 10-under par, one stroke ahead of Bill Haas.

As for my team, overall not a horribly bad day. Jim Furyk cost me with a 4-over par 76 and zero points. Camilo Villegas led my team with a 68 and 16 points. Steve Stricker was close behind with a 3-under 69 for 14 points. Paul Casey rounded up the scoring for the day with an even par 72.

I took Furyk out of my lineup because Englishman Lee Westwood is playing well this week. I hope Westwood continues the trend Saturday to help my team out. I'm leading in my league by six points over Let Tiger Hunt. Tar Heels Rule is back in the pack, and he now leads the overall standing by only a few points. I hope to catch him by the end of the week.

Tiger Woods didn't make an announcement today, so I believe that puts him out of the Arnold Palmer Invitational. That's right unless I'm messing something up (that's entirely possible).

I'm still waiting on an email from someone for Monday's instructional day. Let me know what you need to work on to help make the 2010 season your best, yet. I promise I can do something to help, and the best part is, it's all free.

  • Finally, a good first day

    By Trevor Seibert | Thursday, March 11, 2010 - 22:58

My fantasy golf team got off to a fast start Thursday. The Shankapotamus' scored a league-high 48 points.

My C Player – Paul Casey – led the way with a 3-under par 69, which was good for 16 points.

B Player's Camilo Villegas and Jim Furyk shot 72 and 70, respectively.

    My A Player – Steve Stricker – shot a 1-over par 73.

I am two points ahead of Let Tiger Hunt, who scored 46 points, and I'm ten points ahead of Tar Heels Rule (except they lost in the first round of the ACC Tournament and might not make the Not Invited Tournament). Sorry to rub that in.

I'm not changing the lineup at all for Friday. There's supposed to be a litle bit of inclement weather Friday, so we'll see if they get the second round in. Tee times were moved up to prevent any delays.

Also, an AP source said that Tiger Woods plans on returning at the Masters. We'll see. It's still all speculation, but that tournament still would make sense for Woods. Check back tomorrow to find out if Woods enters the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

  • Fantasy Golf Week 10: WGC-CA Championship

    By Trevor Seibert | Wednesday, March 10, 2010 - 22:17

Doral will play host to 68 of the top golfers in the world at the WGC-CA Championship on Thursday. I need to make up a couple of points that I missed on last week, so here's hoping my team will play well.

    • A PLAYERSTEVE STRICKER – The No. 2 player in the world returns to competition on the PGA Tour. He's competed in two events this year and has two top 10s and a victory. Stricker shot four rounds below par in 2009 and finished tied for 13th place.
    • B PLAYERCAMILO VILLEGAS – I made a mistake in not playing him last week. I thought about it, but I didn't pull the trigger. This week, I'm playing him. He finished tied for 5th here in 2009. Keep the good vibes rolling Spiderman.
    • B PLAYERJIM FURYK – Toss up on who to start here. My two bench players are solid, but I decided on Furyk because he was one of only two players to finish the tournament in 2009 with four rounds in the 60s. Anybody know who the other player was?
    • C PLAYERPAUL CASEY – Casey has had a solid 2010 campaign so far. He shot a second-round 66 in 2009, with three other rounds in the low 70s. I expect Casey to play well this week at Doral.
    • BENCH PLAYERSPhil Mickelson (A); Rory McIlroy (B); Geoff Ogilvy (B); Ian Poulter (C)

We'll see who wins this week. I'm not guessing anymore until one of my picks wins the event. I haven't picked winners real well so far this year. Email me your thoughts, or comment here on how you think my team will compete this week.

  • Willie Maples on YouTube

    By Trevor Seibert | Wednesday, March 10, 2010 - 14:34

I was emailed this a few days ago, and I haven't had a chance to post this. Apparantly, Willie Maples grew up in Rocky Mount and his father used to be a pro at Benvenue. He held a golf tournament at Eagle Falls Golf Course, and he was featured on a couple of news stories on TV.

    Here's the first.

    Here's the other.

Thanks to the emailer. I wasn't sent a name, but this is the kind of stuff I love sharing with the golf community.

  • Funday Sunday

    By Trevor Seibert | Sunday, March 7, 2010 - 20:55

Three tournaments finished up Sunday. One finished with a playoff, the others were blowout victories for some very strong players.

    • PGA TOUR HONDA CLASSIC – Camilo Villegas ran away with this tournament. He finished with a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole. Villegas finished at 13-under par, five strokes ahead of second place finisher Anthony Kim. It's great to see the younger players on Tour competing and playing well against each other with Woods' absence.
    • CHAMPIONS TOUR TOSHIBA CLASSIC – Fred Couples might be to good to be playing on the Champions Tour. He's won two of the three events he's played in, and he finished second at the other event. Couples finished at 18-under par and a four-shot victory over Ronnie Black. Can anyone compete with Couples on a week to week basis.
    • NATIONWIDE TOUR PACIFIC RUBIALES BOGOTA OPEN PRESENTED BY SAMSUNG – This tournament wins for longest name. Steve Pate (-11) won the tournament, and he became the oldest player to win on the Nationwide Tour (48 years old). He beat Aaron Watkins with a par on the second playoffs hole.
    • FANTASY GOLF – Despite a VERY strong final day by my squad, I finished second. The second- and third-place finish by Anthony Kim and Justin Rose propelled me in to second place in the league. Here are the standings:

    Tar Heels Rule – 1,477

    Shankapotamus – 1,448

    Let Tiger Hunt – 1,432

    Look for more Monday.

  • Saturday Special

    By Trevor Seibert | Saturday, March 6, 2010 - 19:55

I'm writing from Cameron Indoor Stadium. One hour and ten minutes away from tipoff. Duke will play host to North Carolina as I'm sure everyone knows by now. The Honda Classic had an interesting day, however, and it had an adverse effect on my fantasy squad.

Anthony Kim had a rough day Saturday after starting the third round tied for the lead. He finished at 3-over par, and he probably is out of contention completely.

Justin Rose had the best day for me a 3-under par, so I grabbed an easy 18 points. My team isn't playing great again this week, but it isn't playing as bad as it has been.

Rory McIlroy had a very tough time Saturday. He shot a 5-over par 75, and I could move him on to the bench. I decided to keep him as a player and not waste eligibility on Lee Westwood. I hope this decision works to my favor.

I received an email from someone regarding a former Rocky Mount native, who is now a golf pro at a popular golf course. I'll run a blog on that sometime in the next couple of days. For now, I'm going to go check out the Duke-North Carolina festivities.

  • Thursday Troubles

    By Trevor Seibert | Thursday, March 4, 2010 - 20:06

Tough conditions crushed competitors at the Honda Classic on Thursday. There weren't a whole lot of players who went low. Nathan Green leads the way with Michael Connell at five-under par. Here's how each team did in the From Tee to Green league.

No. 1 – Tar Heels Rule – Secondgolfer scored 28 points with Steve Marino (+3 for 4 points); Brandt Snedeker (E for 10 points); Chad Collins (+2 for 6 points); and J.B. Holmes (+1 for 8 points).

No. 2 – Let Tiger Hunt – AMDigga scored 24 points with Ernie Els (+3 for 4 points); Sergio Garcia (+4 for 2 points); Rory McIlroy (+1 for 8 points); and Justin Rose (E for 10 points).

No. 3 – Shankapotamus – I scored 22 points with Els (+3 for 4 points); Robert Allenby (+6 for 0 points, he's sitting on the bench now); McIlroy (+1 for 8 points); and Rose (E for 10 points).

I'm not disappointed in the squad. Tough conditions and there's three more days, and I have a few players that shot under par on day one. Enjoy the second round Friday, I'll update everyone on the results.

  • Fantasy Golf Week 9: Honda Classic

    By Trevor Seibert | Wednesday, March 3, 2010 - 20:58

I didn't do a whole lot of research in to this week's field. So, I went a lot on gut feelings (it can't get any worse than last week's picks). So, here are my Week 9 picks.

    • A PLAYER - ERNIE ELS - Els played well here last year. I don't expect anything different from the South African. His game suits this course, and I believe he'll pull out a Top 10 this week.
    • B PLAYER - ROBERT ALLENBY - All the guy has done this year is played exceptionally well in each tournament he's entered. He's due for a breakthrough performance to land a victory on Tour.
    • B PLAYER - RORY McILROY - I think this kid is a phenomenal talent, and the best young player on the planet. He played well here in 2009, and he might just earn his first PGA Tour victory this week.
    • C PLAYER - JUSTIN ROSE - His game is solid. Top players generally play well on tough courses. This is a tough course, he is a top player. Easy equation, we'll see if it pans out.
    • BENCH PLAYERS - ANTHONY KIM (A); LEE WESTWOOD (B); SCOTT PIERCY (B); RICKIE FOWLER (C)

Note of the Week: Only the second time this season I haven't started the defending champion (Y.E. Yang). Can anyone tell me the other tournament that I did this? First one who answers the question right wins a prize.

  • Sunday Finishes

    By Trevor Seibert | Sunday, February 28, 2010 - 22:35

I will admit that I did not watch the majority of the Waste Management Phoenix Open because of the USA men's hockey teams battle for a gold medal against Canada. As soon as Sidney Crosby scored the game-winning goal for the Canadians, I changed the channel. I watched two young stars battle for a victory, and ultimately, it was the older of the two who came away victorious.

    • PGA TOUR – Hunter Mahan earned his second career victory with a final round 65 to finish one stroke ahead of 21-year-old Rickie Fowler. Fowler might have lost the tournament on the par-5 15th hole, where he decided to lay up when he was only 230 or so yards from the pin. The way he was striking the ball all day, a simple 3-iron from that distance would have put him at worst in the green-side bunker. Instead, he layed up, hit a poor approach and settled for a bogey. Mahan made birdie on the par-3 16th hole, which sent the 20,000-plus fans in the coliseum in to a frenzy.
    • NATIONWIDE TOUR – Fran Quinn shot a final round 71 (1-over par), but he held on for a two-stroke victory over Brian Smock in the Nationwide Tour's third event of the season.
    • LPGA TOUR – Does the LPGA have a new star on its hands? Ai Miyazato won her second consecutive tournament with a 3-under 69 to finish two shots ahead of Cristie Kerr. This is the second tournament for the LPGA, and so far, Miyazato is the only winner on Tour. Her game looks a little bit better than anyone on Tour at this point.
    • FANTASY GOLF – Miserable week. I fell behind to last place (out of three teams), but I hope I'll rebound next week. Congratulations to Let Tiger Hunt (AMDigga) and Tar Heels Rule (Secondgolfer) for there T-1 place wins this week. Both teams finished with 144 points. I finished with 126.

Monday will be Instructional Monday as always. I still need one email from someone so I can answer a question. Talk to you then.
