North Edgecombe football thoughts
In today’s print edition of the Telegram, Warriors coach Danny Ward speaks fondly of his players. Ward has been at North Edgecombe for 25 years, serving as football coach for the last five. He said in a telephone conversation Thursday that he has taught and coached the brothers/uncles of current players.
That is dedication. Even Ward didn’t think he would be in Edgecombe County as long as he has been. But that’s what happens when you make an impact on players and, in Ward’s case, families.
A lot of people forget about North Edgecombe’s football history. SouthWest Edgecombe coach Raymond Cobb reminded us during our staff’s visit to the school last week that Edgecombe County has three significant football programs. When you put the history of a Tarboro, North Edgecombe and SouthWest Edgecombe together, you get a pretty fine football resume for such a small county.
Speaking of Warriors and Edgecombe County, check out current Indianapolis Colts linebacker and former North Carolina Tar Heel Victor Worsley’s page on the Colts’ Web site. Worsley is a former two-time Telegram All-Area Defensive Player of the Year. Worsley has not made the NFL in a pampered way. He signed twice with the Colts as a free agent.
I talked to Worsley for a story I did on him when he was a senior at North Carolina. At that point, he was in the mix for one of the linebacker positions during coach John Bunting’s final season in Chapel Hill. Worsley did not have the NFL on his mind at that time. He told me he would most likely try and earn a job in the Triangle area. I guess things change. Good for you, Victor.
