Hickson talks about choice to remain in NBA Draft

2:15 p.m. So, (soon to be former) N.C. State forward J.J. Hickson said he will sign with an agent today. Which means he will remain in the NBA Draft. Which means will not return to Raleigh for another season with the Wolfpack.

Sorry, N.C. State fans. The writing has been on the wall - or the court, if you prefer - for months.

Hickson first suggested that he would not return to N.C. State in March, after the Wolfpack lost to the Miami Hurricanes, 63-50, in the first round of the ACC Tournament in Charlotte. Hickson scored 27 points and grabbed 14 rebounds during that loss and, afterward, said he had not decided whether to “test the waters.”

Hickson, who averaged 14.8 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks last season, formally declared for the NBA Draft a couple of days later, but did not sign with an agent.

All that will change today when, Hickson said Monday in a teleconference, he will sign with Andy Miller, the founder and president of ASM Sports and the agent for more than 20 NBA players, including Boston forward Kevin Garnett, Detroit guard Chauncey Billups and Los Angeles Clippers guard Cuttino Mobley.

“It was my decision to stay in,” Hickson said. “I feel like I’ve been having strong workouts.”

Hickson did not participate in the NBA Pre-Draft Camp in May in Orlando, but said he has worked out for nine teams, including Cleveland, Denver, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, Seattle and Toronto.

“I think I (will) fit in good wherever I go,” Hickson said. “I feel like I’ll have a positive influence wherever I go.”
