Rocky Mount High observations
When your first-string spends the fourth quarter sitting on the bench, wearing hoodies and jackets, you just handled your opponent. And when that opponent is your second-round playoff opponent, you are playing pretty damn well. Rocky Mount High is rolling at the right time, which is good news for everyone involved. The 13th win earned Friday was a school-record, and all the stars have seem to align for the Gryphons and Western Alamance to meet in two weeks for a trip to the state championship.

As great as the Rocky Mount foootball program is, someone has to stop Bob Maloney and Wes Bradshaw from covering the Gryphons on the radio…They continually criticize the referees and Bob has been doing that for years and half the time they even miss a play call during the game, because they are rambling on about irrelevant subjects, including thier dislike of officials…Someone please call the radio station and have them tossed out on thier ears and let the officials do the job they are trained for…

The Telegram article of Nov 17,2007 says: “No other Rocky Mount team in history had recorded a playoffs shutout. The 2007 Gryphons now have two.”
The 1963 team won the 4A State Championship and, in the process, beat Walter Hines Page High School in Greensboro 42-0 in the semi-final game of the playoffs. This strikes me as pretty close to a shutout and I not that this was before the playoffs were filled with early round patsies like today. I got this score from the Gryphon Grapevine. What’s your source?

I guess when it says “please Wait” for several minutes, and you finally give up and close the page, it has already taken the comment. Sorry about giving the same comment three times…

The Gryphons were so dominant in the first half South Granville players and coaches looked demoralized heading into the locker room. They even looked like they did not want to come back out for the second half. I do not believe Union Pines and South Granville had seen anything like they faced in an opponent all season long as they witnessed in the Gryphons. The Gryphon defense again delivered some bone crushing hits and even the third string RM QB got into the act when he flattened a South Granville defender making a QB sweep late in the fourth quarter. The thing RM needs to be careful of is the unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. The last thing RM needs is to start getting players ejected for the next game. They need everyone healthy and able to participate as a potential rematch with Western Alamance gets closer. With the performance of the JV team the last two seasons, the depth of the running backs and QBs, RM looks to be in great position to dominate again next year. I would like to see larger RM fan support at next week’s matchup with Southern Wayne than what has been displayed at the first two rounds of the state play-offs. Congratulations to Coach Holt and the Gryphons for putting an exciting team on the field. They are fun to watch. Go Gryphs! Beat Southern Wayne!

Wow Marla, what do you have against the radio crew? While I will be the first to admit they are not the best in the world, you can obviously hear the passion both guys have for the Gryphons. They are the Rocky Mount radio crew, therefore they are going to be pro-Rocky Mount. Bob will go on a rant every now and then, but overall he is knowledgable and does a good job. Wes is still new to the business and has a lot of room to grow, but he will be good one day. Give them a break, sit back and enjoy the ride. And if you don’t want to listen to the radio, go to the game. The school would love the gate.

Congratulations to Coach Holt & the “Gryphon’s” for an outstanding season. If I’m not mistaking the team we’re watching now is comprised of Rocky Mount’s first tackle football team. I’ve watched these young guys develop into young men. They play with the same passion; excitement and commitment they started with when were “Little Panthers and Titans, singing, chanting & having fun together before and after games. I have no doubt that we Can & Will win a “State Championship.” I feel the excitement and wish more people would come out and support these young men & coaches. It would be nice if we could fill the stadium and the loud roar from the cheering crowd could be heard from miles away. I can’t wait to get on the road to West Alamance. “GO GRYPHONS”

Well, Mr. Keller you apparently missed the major point of my comments and that is that they are continually critical of the officiating, week after week and I do not beleive that either has worn the stripes..I would love to go to the games, but with my wheelchair and colostomy bag, would you be willing to sit with me…They are truly amateurs

It is true that Bob has a tendency to go on about the officials. But I listened to the game at work Friday night and scarcely heard a word about them. As for calling them amateurs, what do you expect, Woody Durham? Vin Scully? It’s local high school football? I think the community is lucky to have the coverage we have. The Game of the Week does a good job with Paul Andre and Dave Richmond and Bob and Wes do a good job with the Gryphons.

Actually Marla, I was a T-Ball umpire when I was in high school. My popularity continues to soar…

Wes needs to remember that by DOING something he has opened himself up to criticism by those who do nothing (except criticize!) [ Now let’s see how many times I submit this comment. Last time it was three —- Before anyone criticizes —-I KNOW it was stupid of me].

The Rocky Mount Gryphons once again dominated football in eastern North Carolina in 2007. But they found out once again that their much heralded defense was overated when they played Western Alamance. The Gryphons hardly ever see teams in eastern North Carolina that pass the ball and as a result they are not prepared for this when they play teams west of I-95.
The Gryphons outstanding running attack is good enough to advance to the 4th round of the high school playoffs. However, Rocky Mount will have to develop a more balanced running and passing attack if they plan on playing in a state championship game. Their defense against the pass also needs to improve.
