Rocky Mount High-Northern Nash observations
- Anyone looking for any extras in B.W. Holt-Chad Smith storyline went home disappointed Friday night.
-Holt, the coach of the Gryphons, stayed with his team during the pregame warmups, while Smith, Holt’s former assistant and now in his first year at Northern Nash, went through pregame routines on the Knights’ practice field. Before the game, players and coaches from both teams shook hands. When the final whistle was blown, each team went immediately went there separate ways.
-Although there was no outward show of emotion, there is an unspoken respect between the two coaches. There is respect between the two teams as well. Rocky Mount left the field in a double-file line and on their way to the bus, a few Knights players stopped and shook hands with their counterparts.
- This was a night where the damage was done on the field. The Gryphons won convincingly, 54-21. There was no need to rub anything in someone’s face or bring up the past. Rocky Mount is moving on the NCHSAA 3-A state playoffs. Northern Nash is looking to be in the same position, perhaps next season.
-Maybe next year the game will be closer, but Friday night was just about football. Just the way it should have been.
