Dr. Mitchell Mah'moud, a member of the medical staff of Nash Health Care Systems, was recently named a fellow in the American Gastroenterological Association, the nation's oldest medical society dedicated to the disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.
Through the fellowship program, the AGA honors superior professional achievement in clinical private or academic practice and in basic or clinical research. Fellowships are awarded to AGA members whose accomplishments and contributions demonstrate personal commitment to the field of gastroenterology.

"The National Institute of Health estimates that 60 to 70 million Americans are affected by digestive diseases," said Mah'moud, "and it is my duty as a health care provider to continually administer cutting-edge diagnostic and treatment practices to my patients in this community. I am honored to have been nominated and inducted as an AGA Fellow in recognition of the service I provide in my medical specialty," said Mah'moud.
Dr. Mah'moud added, "I give honor to the Lord who remains the ultimate Healer of our diseases and uses doctors as conduits to heal us."
Mah'moud received his postgraduate medical training from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed his fellowship training in gastroenterology and hepatology at Yale University School of Medicine. He has been a member of the medical staff at Nash Health Care for seven years. In addition, Mah'moud (who is already a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology) serves on the credentials committee for the Fellowship award of the American College of Gastroenterology. He is also a panel member of the International Forum for the new classification of acute pancreatitis and a peer reviewer on liver disorders for the Journal of the American College of Gastroenterology.
Mah'moud holds a clinical faculty position at Duke University School of Medicine where he teaches Gastroenterology fellows.
"We are pleased to welcome Dr. Mitchell Mah'moud as a new member into the AGA Fellowship program," said Mark Donowitz, MD, AGAF, AGA Institute President. "Dr. Mah'moud has demonstrated his achievement of meeting a strict set of criteria of excellence recognized by his peers and his community."
It is estimated that 14 million individuals are hospitalized due to GI disorders. Nash Health Care is a county-owned, nonprofit corporation.
