PINE KNOLL SHORES — Heavy equipment has arrived on the North Carolina coast for a beach renourishment project.
The heavy equipment will be used along Bogue Banks near Pine Knoll Shores.
Carteret County Shore Protection Manager Greg Rudolph says the dredging is expected to start later this week.
Great Lakes Dredge & Dock will use three dredges, 24-hours-a-day, starting at Pine Knoll Shores and moving to other locations in Emerald Isle.
Pine Knoll Shores town manager Brian Kramer it will take about two weeks to pump the sand on about 2.5 miles of the town's beach.
The locations for renourishment were developed from surveys after Hurricane Irene in 2011.
The $15 million project is being funded through federal and local funds.
