WARRENTON — The U.S. Justice Department is taking Warren County's school board to court on behalf of an Army reservist the government says lost his job because of his service.
Government lawyers said Friday they're suing the school board because it voted not to renew Dwayne Coffer's contract as an assistant principal at Warren County High School in 2008. School employees had expressed frustration at Coffer performing military service during the academic year.
A school district spokeswoman declined comment Friday.
Federal law prohibits employers from discriminating against Army Reserve soldiers, or terminating an employee because he has to miss work due to military obligations.
The lawsuit seeks to recover Coffer's lost wages and benefits and restore his job.
Coffer served in Kuwait and Afghanistan in 2004 and 2005.
