FAYETTEVILLE — A union official says the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. plant in Fayetteville is eliminating about 200 positions and will be offering workers buyouts.

The president of the local steelworkers union, Darryl Jackson, says the union will vote this week on changing a labor contract to allow the buyouts. Johnson says if the buyouts are not approved, the company will lay off 200 people by the end of next month.

The plant employs almost 2,800 people.

Company spokesman Chris Curran said he could not talk about proposed buyouts or the loss of jobs until after the union vote. But Curran said the Fayetteville plant is not in any danger of closing. It opened in 1969.
