VILLAGE OF PINEHURST — North Carolina authorities have charged a golf cart driver at the U.S. Open golf tournament in Pinehurst with felonies after they say he hit a trooper and tried to get away.
The state Department of Public Safety said Sunday that Highway Patrol Trooper Ryan Goodin was treated for a minor leg injury. He was one of about 170 troopers helping with security at the four-day event scheduled to end Sunday.
Officials said 59-year-old Thomas Lineberry of Wilmington was charged with assault on a law enforcement officer and hit and run, both felonies. He also was charged with driving while impaired and resisting arrest.
A message left at a Wilmington number listed for Lineberry was not returned Sunday.
State officials say Lineberry posted a $3,000 bond Saturday night.
