BLADENBORO — An evacuation order has been lifted for an Eastern North Carolina town hours after the derailment of a train that was carrying hazardous materials.

Capt. Rodney Hester of the Bladen County sheriff's office said the incident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. Saturday. He said a CSX train was crossing a small bridge over a creek when the structure apparently gave way, causing about 10 cars to end up on their side, including one containing ammonia.

About 300 to 400 nearby residents were evacuated. Ammonia is potentially explosive and can cause respiratory problems.

However, local officials lifted the evacuation order Saturday evening after CSX's hazardous materials team determined the tanker was structurally sound and not leaking.

Hester said CSX plans to pump out the ammonia Tuesday or Thursday. No one was injured.
