POLKTON — Officials say one inmate is dead and one was injured in a fight at an Anson County correctional center.

The N.C. Department of Public Safety say a fight broke out around 1:30 p.m. Friday at Lanesboro Correctional Institution, which is a high security prison in Polkton, about 45 miles southeast of Charlotte. It has 1,000 cells.

Spokeswoman Pamela Walker identified the dead inmate as 35-year-old Wesley Turner. Records show Turner had served time for a number of offenses, including murder and assault on a public official. The records also show he attempted to break out of prison.

The injured inmate wasn't identified.

Walker said prison managers locked down the institution while the incident is investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation and the Anson County Sheriff's Office.
