RALEIGH — Police in Raleigh say they have arrested a suspect in a murder that took place on Christmas Day more than a decade ago.

Police said 59-year-old Alfonso Montoya Hernandez is accused of killing Pedro Castillo Gallegos at a home in East Raleigh on Dec. 25, 1999. Hernandez was arrested in North Dakota and is awaiting extradition back to Raleigh.

Gallegos was 28 at the time of his death. He had been stabbed and cut when police arrived at a residence around 4:30 that Christmas morning.

Police said Hernandez was quickly identified as a suspect, but was thought to have fled the United States. Because of the pending warrant for his arrest, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents arrested him Wednesday.\
