OAK ISLAND — Oak Island officials say they won't be changing their laws that allow dogs to be on their beaches during the summer.
The town council had been asked to consider banning dogs on the beaches by someone who said he saw a dog on a leash lunge at a child.
The town is considered one of the most dog-friendly beaches on the East Coast.
Mayor Betty Wallace said at Tuesday's council meeting that almost all the comments on possible restrictions had been in favor of continuing to allow dogs to have access to the shore.
Wallace does want the council to consider next month whether any changes are needed in local ordinances. Wallace says she would like animal control officers to have more authority to remove nuisance dogs from the beaches.
