ASHEVILLE — A police officer in North Carolina has shot and wounded a man after the officer's patrol car was rammed during a chase.

Woodfin Police Chief Brett Holloman said the shooting followed a 10-minute chase.

Holloman said an officer tried to make a traffic stop on Interstate 26 around 4 a.m. Sunday when the suspect took off. The chase ended in west Asheville.

A 38-year-old man was taken to Mission Hospital in Asheville and was in stable condition. His injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

Holloman said Woodfin officers and Buncombe County sheriff's deputies blocked the suspect's vehicle in a driveway. Holloman says the man then drove into a Woodfin officer's car.

The officer then fired. Holloman says the officer was not hurt.

Charges are pending against the driver.
