BURLINGTON — A Charlotte man recently released from prison is back behind bars in Burlington, accused of making false police reports.

Police officers responded about 4:22 a.m. on Thursday to an Econo Lodge motel on reports that the clerk had been shot. A caller reported that he had shot the clerk.

Officers discovered that no shooting had occurred and during the course of the day additional calls were made falsely reporting shootings.

An investigation of guests at the motel turned up James Edward Miles, police said has an extensive history of filing false police reports and misuse of the 911 system. The 37-year-old Charlotte man had been released from state prison the prior weekend.

Now facing new charges, Miles was jailed under a $20,000 bond.
