GREENSBORO — Some Greensboro residents got a four-legged surprise walking the city's streets.

A chestnut mare named Citation was left untethered Thursday in a yard in the 1900 block of Autumn Court, located about two miles northeast of the city's downtown.

Owner Brian Griffin said he felt comfortable leaving Citation alone munching hay in front of at his grandmother's house because she had never gone anywhere before. She began wandering the streets sometime Thursday night.

Neighbors called the police after seeing the horse on the loose. Responding officers and animal control officers managed to coral Citation and herd her back home.

Guilford County Animal Control spokeswoman Lynne Beck said Griffin would not be charged since it was the first offense by Citation's owner.
