SURF CITY — A fire driven by strong winds has destroyed a motel and a house in Surf City.

Authorities say the fire broke out about 3 a.m. Thursday destroying Tiffany's Motel. A house by the motel also was destroyed and another house was damaged. There was only one occupant in the hotel and no one was at home in either residence.

One person was taken to the hospital for burns on their arms and hands.

Pender County Emergency Management director Tom Collins says fire departments from seven communities responded.

The fire was whipped by strong winds from a storm front moving through early Thursday. It took firefighters three hours to bring the fire under control.
