RALEIGH — Gov. Pat McCrory is asking the U.S. Small Business Administration to issue a disaster declaration for people who suffered from flooding last month in Watauga County.

Severe thunderstorms and flooding hit the area on Jan. 30.

A disaster declaration would make homeowners, renters and business owners eligible for low-interest loans to help them recover from the flooding.

Local and state emergency management teams surveyed the damage last week and met with staff members of the Small Business Administration. The teams looked at about three dozen homes and businesses in Watauga County to see who might qualify for federal help.

Boone had more than 5 inches of rain on Jan. 30. Deep Gap had nearly 4 inches of rain.
