SHELBY — Police say they charged a man with murder after he caused a wreck that killed two people in downtown Shelby while he fled from police.

Authorities said an officer monitoring traffic near several outdoor events saw 34-year-old Demetrist Roberts speed past around 1 p.m. Saturday.

A second officer tried to pull over Roberts, but police say he stopped the chase because other cars and pedestrians made it too dangerous.

Authorities say Roberts kept driving recklessly and ran a red light, hitting another car. Two people in the other car were killed as hundreds of people at the events downtown saw the wreck.

Roberts is charged with two counts of second-degree murder and several other charges, Police say his driver's license was revoked.

It wasn't known if Roberts has a lawyer.
