RALEIGH — Wallace Hyde is being remembered as a successful political strategist and fundraiser who helped make the Democratic Party business-friendly in North Carolina.

Brown-Wynne Funeral Home confirmed Hyde died Monday at his Raleigh home at age 89. The state Democratic Party said Hyde died after suffering from Parkinson's disease for 20 years.

Hyde grew up in Graham County and was active in Terry Sanford's winning 1960 gubernatorial campaign. Hyde raised money for decades for Democratic candidates for governor and for national figures like Jimmy Carter.

Four-term Gov. Jim Hunt said that Hyde helped move forward "modern progressive politics" in the past 50 years.

Hyde's survivors include his wife, former U.S. ambassador Jeannette Hyde.

A memorial service is set Friday at a Raleigh church.
