LINVILLE GORGE — Rescuers have helped three hikers trapped by high waters at a river in Linville Gorge.

Emergency crews say the hikers and a dog could not cross the Linville River on Wednesday after the water rose because of storms on Tuesday. The hikers had made the initial call for help Tuesday night but had hiked elsewhere before crews arrived.

Rescue workers arrived at the area around noon Wednesday. They used a rope to tie themselves and the hikers together and cross the river safely.

No one was hurt. The hikers' names were not released.
