SALUDA — Rescue workers have recovered the body of a hiker from the base of a waterfall in the western North Carolina mountains.

Officials say the body of 24-year-old Jesse Pague of Saluda was found at the base of Big Bradley Falls in Polk County late Thursday morning.

Saluda Fire and Rescue Deputy Chief Zach Pace says Pague fell off a cliff and landed at the base of the 75-foot waterfall.

Sheriff Donald Hill says Pague had been reported missing Wednesday evening. He had told his mother he was going for an overnight hike Tuesday in the forest but failed to make an expected call Wednesday morning.

Three teens hiking at the bottom of the waterfall found a backpack with Pague's identification late Wednesday afternoon.

Crews spotted the body early Thursday.
