CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The National Weather Service is keeping close watch on an area of disturbed weather which holds the key to the prospects for winter precipitation next week.

Meteorologist Nick Petro of the NWS office in Raleigh said there is a range of possibilities that will be clarified in the next few days. He said variables include how much moisture will be distributed and how much cold air will infiltrate the state and how long it stays.

Petro said if the system tracks north and brings warm air, the state can expect more rain. If it stays to the south, it will allow more cold air in but keep the moisture out.

In advance of next week's weather, Petro said central and north-central areas could see a dusting of snow on Saturday.
