ELIZABETH, N.J.  — A former juvenile detention officer at a northern New Jersey facility stands accused of having a sexual relationship with a teenage detainee over the course of nearly a year.

Union County prosecutors say 37-year-old Sherrie Brown-Braswell of Raleigh, North Carolina, turned herself in early Monday. She's charged with sexual assault and criminal sexual contact.

Authorities say the sexual contact between Brown-Braswell and the male detainee occurred between March 2012 and January 2013 at the Union County Juvenile Detention Center in Linden. They say all the contact occurred while Brown-Braswell was on duty.

Brown-Braswell resigned her position with the county early last year. Her bail has been set at $350,000 and it wasn't known if she has retained an attorney.

Her first court appearance is expected to be held Wednesday.
