CHERRYVILLE — Officials in Cherryville have suspended the town's police chief and captain following the arrests of three officers on federal charges.

A news release from the town said Cherryville Police Chief Woody Burgess and Capt. Mike Allred have been suspended with pay.

Interim City Manager Jeff Cash will act as interim police chief. He is also Cherryville's fire chief.

District Attorney Locke Bell said he intends to dismiss all charges in pending cases that rely on testimony from the officers arrested Wednesday. They face bribery and corruption charges after prosecutors said they conspired to provide protection for tractor trailers transporting what's described as stolen goods and cash.

Bell said he didn't know how many cases would be dismissed, but planned to take a count Thursday.

WOW

Didn't the Town of Farmville just hire the former town manager from Cherryville? I think he was fired from that town just a few months ago for not knowing about some embezzlement that was going on under his nose. Wonder how he didn't know about all of this going on under his watch. Be interesting to see how all this pans out. Farmville may be looking for their fourth town manager in 2 years before long! Looks like they (Farmville) really check out town managers before they hire them.
