CALABASH — A Brunswick County sheriff's deputy has been charged in connection with a fatal wreck near Calabash earlier this week.

Fifty-nine-year-old Deputy Adam Lockner is charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to yield the right of way after his patrol car hit a motorcycle Monday on U.S. 17.

Lockner was responding to a domestic call at the time.

The motorcycle rider, Thomas Varney, died at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Lockner is on paid administrative leave. The North Carolina Highway Patrol and the sheriff's office are investigating.

Lockner has been with the sheriff's office since 2009.
