CHAPEL HILL — An audit indicates more than $123,000 is missing from the box office and business operation of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.
A yearlong internal university audit found the money unaccounted for between 2007 and 2011, media outlets reported.
The audit showed $121,000 in cash and $2,500 in checks missing from the business operation that oversees the box office for various performances.
The newspaper obtained the audit through a public records request.
The report says cash deposits and records were improperly handled prior to January 2011. Deposits sometimes were delayed two or three weeks that should have been made the next day.
"These weaknesses allowed a significant loss of funds to occur without being detected at the time of the loss," the report said.
An employee whose name was not included in the report is no longer working for the university, the report said. The status of a second employee was unclear. School spokeswoman Karen Moon would not talk about the employees' status.
The university's Public Safety Department reviewed the case and could not determine a definitive suspect, spokesman Randy Young said. The Orange-Chatham District Attorney's Office decided against prosecution, he said.
The executive director for the arts, Emil Kang, said the problems were discovered when a new business staff took over in 2011.
Cash handling procedures have been changed to improve accountability, Kang said.
