GREENSBORO — About 620 workers will lose their jobs when a North Carolina factory that makes electrical connectors for household appliances shuts down in 2013. It is one of the state's largest announced layoffs this year.

A spokesman for Swiss electronics maker TE Connectivity said Thursday the company will shut a Greensboro factory beginning in January. The company said earlier this week tough economic conditions pushed it to generate another $75 million in cost savings from plant closings and other restructuring.

Spokesman Tom Peacock says up to 50 of the plant's 670 employees may transfer to one of the company's three other plants in Greensboro and Winston-Salem.

A Greensboro call center's March announcement it planned to cut 685 workers is the largest layoff notice recorded by the state Commerce Department this year.
